Snow Shovelling Soup for Grownups
Great for when the job is done and you've got a roaring fire going; no staggering around in the snow after a couple bowls, please. Serve hot in mugs to 6 deserving people.

Snow Shoveling

4 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cups red wine
5 cups beef stock
6 slices of lemon, cut paper thin

Directions

Four to six hours before serving, bring the cinnamon sticks, sugar, and red wine to a boil, turn off heat, cover, and let sit.

When you're ready to serve, strain into simmering beef stock, bring just to a boil, then ladle into mugs. Top with a paper-thin slice of lemon if desired.

Yield: 6 servings

Snow Shovelling Soup for All Ages
Just the ticket for frozen hands and ice-prickly nose hairs. Serve hot in mugs to 4 people.

Ingredients:
6 cups beef stock
1 potato, grated
1 carrot, grated
1 onion, grated
1 stalk celery, grated
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish

Bring the stock to a boil in a large saucepan. Grate the vegetables right into the broth and cook on a medium heat until tender. When ready to serve, stir in the horseradish. Simmer for 2 minutes, then serve in mugs with a spoon.
